September 11th - A Reflection
Photographs by Charlene Miangolarra
Introduction by K W Emert
Part 1
The footprint of what was the World Trade Center is surprisingly small. A city block surrounded by giants, the space seems impossibly empty when viewed from the vast glass windows at the top of the stairs - marble stairs - beautiful and elegant - lifting away after a colonnade of palms all under the glass-roofed Winter Garden that bridges the footprint and the Hudson River.
Part 2
To the left are solid square granite buildings rooted to the sidewalk like monolithic cliffs. Across is the churchyard and spire of St. Paul's Chapel that has witnessed 250 years of history. And to the right is 10 House, this neighborhood's fire station. My eyes well up as I think of souls saved, souls lost and remembered. That these buildings still stand is nothing less than incredible.
Part 3
10 House is the home of the FDNY Memorial Wall, 56 feet of bronze bas relief that draws the hand to touch the images, leads the eye down to read the names of the 344 Firefighters who died that day responding to the disaster at their doorstep.
Part 4
In the days of the disaster and for months that followed, more than 14,000 people would come to St. Paul's to provide relief of all kinds to those in the midst of what surely was a living nightmare. And today they still come, hoping to provide any kind of relief, leaving behind mementos in pews, on sidewalks, flying from high atop a crane, proclamations of hope and faith, promises to those who are gone that they will
never be forgotten.
